For as long as people have exchanged tokens of love, natural diamonds have held a special place among them. Formed over billions of years and admired across cultures, they’ve come to represent devotion, endurance, and lasting connection.

From ancient myths to modern proposals, these gems have symbolized everything from protection and power to the promise of forever. But how did a mineral born deep within the Earth become the ultimate emblem of romance?

This is the story of how natural diamonds became the world’s most enduring symbol of love.

The history and symbolism of natural diamonds

From warding off the unwanted to protecting soldiers in battle, diamonds have been viewed and used in fascinating ways throughout history.

The Ancient Romans regarded diamonds as symbols of invincibility and divine strength, believing they could protect the wearer from harm. Roman soldiers and nobles sometimes carried diamond-studded rings or amulets into battle as talismans of courage and protection1. Centuries later, medieval knights and kings continued the tradition of wearing gemstones for strength and favor, embellishing their armor and regalia with jewels believed to hold protective and spiritual power2.

Diamonds formed in the Earth have always been considered to possess mystical qualities, the Ancient Greek philosopher Plato believed they held the life of heavenly spirits with ethereal powers. As time went on, the belief of the Ancient Greeks morphed into diamonds being teardrops of heavenly spirits or gods3.

In ancient India, diamonds were viewed in a similarly sacred way and were thought to offer protection and power to their wearers; like the ancient Greeks and Romans, the precious gems were viewed as having magical and divine qualities4.

This reverence towards diamonds continued into the Middle Ages. As trade routes expanded, diamonds became a symbol of status and power, owned by royalty and the rich5.

The emotional resonance of natural diamonds in romantic relationships

How did diamonds become symbols of love and romance? The first recorded proposal featuring a diamond ring is believed to have taken place in 14776, when Archduke Maximilian of Austria presented one to Mary of Burgundy. The gesture was more than extravagant; it marked the beginning of a tradition. Soon after, diamond engagement rings became a favored choice among European nobility, their brilliance seen as the perfect reflection of enduring love.

While rings had been exchanged long before7, often crafted from simple materials like iron or gold, the diamond elevated the ritual, transforming it into a lasting emblem of devotion.

The rare creation of natural diamonds

The appeal of natural diamonds lies not only in their beauty but in the extraordinary conditions that create them. Formed deep within the Earth under intense heat and pressure, each one takes billions of years to emerge.

Only a small percentage of these rough diamonds ever reach the surface (carried upward by volcanic activity), and an even smaller number possess the clarity and quality required for fine jewelry. That transformation, from elemental carbon to something luminous and enduring, is part of what makes natural diamonds so symbolic.

A one-of-a-kind expression of love

Each natural diamond is also one of a kind. Like snowflakes, no two share the same internal characteristics or patterns of light. Each reflects its own history, shaped slowly over time.

Their strength adds another layer of meaning. As the hardest known natural material on Earth8, a diamond’s durability makes it a powerful symbol of resilience, devotion, and an unbreakable bond that stands the test of time.

And, of course, there’s their beauty: still unmatched after billions of years in the making.

Cultural and historical moments that reinforced diamonds symbolic power

Some of the most famous engagements of all time have only helped to solidify the international appeal of a diamond proposal. Take Marilyn Monroe’s engagement to Joe DiMaggio in 1954: Marilyn’s breathtaking ring from Joe was an eye-catching platinum and emerald-cut diamond eternity band that showcased 36 diamonds9.

The 1981 engagement of Princess Diana and Prince Charles was another defining cultural moment. At its center was a striking 12-carat sapphire surrounded by diamonds10, a bold departure from traditional engagement rings. The piece quickly became one of the most recognizable jewels in history. Decades later, Prince William chose the same ring to propose to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, linking two generations through one extraordinary symbol of love and legacy.

Another big-hitter in the diamond ring stakes is the $5million 18-carat flawless-graded diamond by Lorraine Schwartz that Jay-Z proposed to Beyoncé with in 200711. It features what’s known as a ‘split shank’ (where the band splits into two or more strands), adding a graceful ‘flowing’ feel to the ring and has near-perfect clarity.

How diamonds came to symbolize enduring love and lasting commitment

As the famous De Beers tagline reminds us, “a diamond is forever.” That sentiment endures for good reason. But contrary to popular belief, it reflects something deeper than durability alone.

A natural diamond isn’t just long-lasting. It holds the memories, milestones, and meaning of the relationship it symbolizes. Over time, it becomes part of a couple’s shared story, a quiet witness to the life they build together.

What makes it powerful isn’t only how it’s made, but what it represents: love that grows richer, more complex, and more beautiful with time. In that sense, the sparkle isn’t just light; it’s a reflection of everything the relationship has weathered and become.

The significance of giving rare, real and timeless diamonds

You’ve likely heard stories of diamonds being handed down through families, or perhaps you’ve been lucky enough to receive one yourself. But it’s not just their monetary value or the diamond itself that’s passed down, but their emotional weight and the stories, memories and meaning that it carries with it, growing deeper over time.

When a diamond is passed down from generation to generation, it becomes a bridge between past and present; a way of keeping loved ones near, even after they’re gone. The same goes for a diamond proposal; it’s not just a beautiful gemstone exchanged between a couple, but the promise of keeping each other close and treasuring each other for a lifetime.

The world’s fascination with natural diamond engagement rings is, by no means, a modern-day affair. Take a closer look at the history of diamond engagement rings and you’ll learn that natural diamonds have served as just about the most romantic declaration of love and commitment imaginable for centuries – and for good reason.

While today, diamonds are, undoubtedly, the world’s most highly coveted gemstones, what turned them into the go-to choice for engagement rings specifically? Were they always so closely linked to bridal tradition? From Renaissance-era ladies to Elizabeth Taylor’s 10 (yes, 10!) famous engagements1, natural diamonds have proudly glinted on the hands of women through the centuries. Here’s how it all came about…

The origins of engagement rings

Were engagement rings always anchored in love and devotion? Not exactly. And they weren’t always crafted from diamonds either. As noted by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) the earliest-documented engagement rings date back to Ancient Rome and were worn by women as a marker of a ‘business contract’ or to showcase mutual love and obedience2 (thankfully times have changed to be much more romantic). As per the GIA, these early engagements rings were inspired by those worn by Egyptian pharaohs. The circular shapes represented eternity and reflected the shape of the sun and the moon, celestial bodies central to Egyptian worship.

Loupe inspecting a natural diamond
As a loupe brings out the depth of a diamond, history exposes the layered symbolism behind the rings we give in love.

While gold eventually emerged as the metal of choice (the ruins of Pompeii reveal that gold betrothal rings existed as early as 79 CE)3, engagement rings sported in Ancient Rome were also created from materials like bronze, ivory, iron and even bone. While the legacy of engagement rings in cultural history dates back centuries, it was only in 850 CE that the engagement ring was given an official meaning when Pope Nicholas I declared that it represented a man’s intent to marry4. That decision set the stage for modern-day interpretations of the engagement ring’s purpose as a symbol of love, fidelity and eternity.

When diamonds became part of the engagement tradition

So when did diamonds come into it? Well, it’s believed that the world’s first diamond engagement ring was presented by the Archduke Maximilian of Austria, to Mary of Burgundy, his wife-to-be, in 14775. A painting by Niklas Reiser from c. 15006 shows Mary wearing a solitaire on her right hand.

While the Archduke played a crucial role in the history of diamond engagement rings, he wasn’t the only Renaissance-era man who chose to showcase his romantic commitment with a diamond. Diamond engagement rings soared in popularity during the Renaissance period, playing an important part in marriage contracts among European royalty and aristocracy.

It meant diamonds soon came to denote the idea of rarity, eternity, resilience and strength – values still associated with the lifelong commitment of marriage today.

How diamonds gained global mass appeal

Diamond engagement rings began to appear in the US in the mid 1800s7 but wasn’t until the late 1800s that diamond mines were discovered in the Cape Colony8(modern-day South Africa). This led to a dramatic increase in the supply of natural diamonds, making them more accessible globally.

In 1947, a stroke of marketing genius altered the history of natural diamond engagement rings forever with the De Beers Group’s revolutionary ‘A Diamond is Forever’ campaign9. Simple yet profound, it helped cement that long-held association between natural diamonds and love. The campaign proved to be so impactful in fact, that the number of brides in the US who received diamond engagement rings jumped from 10% in 1939 to 80% in 1990.10

It helped too, that Hollywood had also begun to endorse diamonds at the time, helping catapult the gemstone to the highest halls of fame and establishing diamonds not just as a status symbol, but a lasting, tangible asset. Case in point? Marilyn Monroe’s iconic performance of the song ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend’ in the 1953 classic film ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’11.

Grace Kelly’s emerald-cut diamond engagement ring, which she flaunted in her 1956 (final) Hollywood film ‘High Society’12 was pretty hard to forget, too. Rather than wear a ’prop’ ring when playing socialite bride-to-be Tracy Lord, Kelly insisted on wearing her very own engagement ring from Prince Rainier III of Monaco (a dazzling 10.48 carat diamond flanked by two baguette diamonds). It meant audiences saw the star effectively play out her own transition into aristocracy on screen.

Enduring appeal: why tradition still matters today

While engagement ring trends undoubtedly change – with elements like unconventional cuts and unique settings, for example, becoming more popular in recent years – natural diamonds, unsurprisingly, show no signs of waning when it comes to popularity.

Take Zendaya and Tom Holland. Holland is said to have proposed to the style icon with a glorious five-carat cushion-cut natural diamond engagement ring13 that turned all heads at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards. With an east-west setting, the button-back style perfectly balances timeless vintage appeal with modern flair (what else would we expect to see on the finger of the Gen-Z trailblazer?).

Another recent big-hitter that got everyone talking was Dua Lipa’s chunky, sculptural engagement ring, given to her by her actor partner, Callum Turner. The modern yellow gold cigar band14 heroes a beautiful round-brilliant or old European cut (the jury’s still out) natural diamond, estimated to be between two to four carats, which is elegantly half-set, with open sides.

Of course, passing down precious jewelry as family heirlooms has been a cherished tradition through the decades too, and today’s couples still seemingly recognize its sentimental power. A wonderful way to honor the past while celebrating the future, natural diamond engagement rings that pass through families and generations remind us that natural diamonds are an enduring symbol of love – and not solely in the romantic sense, either.

The future of a timeless tradition

Today more than ever, couples rely on their choice of ring to help tell their unique shared story and personal values. From multi-stone silhouettes and mixed metals to chunkier, thicker bands and sculptural shapes, many modern engagement rings are unafraid to break tradition. But trends have also led to a revival of nostalgia-driven designs of natural diamond engagement rings, along with heirloom and vintage pieces.

With so much choice available, choosing the right ring – one that authentically mirrors your tastes, union and shared story – has arguably never been important. And when you opt for a natural diamond engagement ring, it means you’re not just celebrating your union and finding that magical ‘forever’ kind of love (though that’s certainly worth toasting) but continuing a beautifully romantic tradition that dates back centuries, spanning countless other love stories, too. Pretty special, when you think about it, right?

Let’s face it, it’s not every day you shop for an engagement ring, so choosing one that feels like the one is a decision you want to get right.

Whether you’re buying for a partner or searching for the ring of your dreams yourself, trawling Pinterest for inspiration will only take you so far. Instead, you need the facts about what’s important and what’s not.

There’s a lot to consider, from ring size, setting, style and choice of metal to the all-important gem at its center (and there are plenty of reasons why it should be a natural diamond, FYI!). Most of us want something beautiful, yes, but also wearable, timeless and, importantly, within budget.

If your first question is, “what diamond size should I get?”, you’re not alone. It’s also a question that calls for some careful consideration, since it’s not necessarily straightforward.

Why carat is normally the starting point in engagement ring shopping

Of all the diamond details to consider, carat weight often takes center stage first.

What does carat mean in diamonds?

When we talk about carats, we’re referring to the weight of the diamond, not size. It tends to be one of the first things that comes to mind when people start thinking seriously about a diamond. You’ve probably heard benchmarks bounced around, like the idea that a one-carat diamond is the ‘standard’ size for engagement rings. And while that might be the right choice for some, it’s by no means a hard and fast rule.

Choosing the right diamond is about more than just carat weight – and even carat weight itself (and how it translates in real life) is more nuanced than most people realize.

What carat size really looks like in real life

Let’s visualize. Loosely speaking, a 0.5 carat round cut diamond is about the size of a peppercorn, a one-carat sits closer to a small pea and by three carats, you’re looking at something about the size of a cranberry.

Take these comparisons with a generous pinch of salt, though. The actual look of a diamond isn’t just about carat weight. It’s also heavily influenced by its shape and cut, among other factors.

Which diamond shapes look the biggest?

Typically, elongated shapes like oval or emerald cuts tend to look larger because of their stretched surface area. If you want something that really shows off its size from the top view, opt for shallow cuts that have more surface area rather than the deeper ones, which tuck their weight below the surface.

Choosing a setting that enhances the central diamond, like a halo or three-stone setting (also known as a ‘trilogy’), can additionally create the illusion of a larger gem and boost your ring’s overall brilliance.

You might also want to think about the metal band that frames it. A thinner, more delicate band, for example, can instantly make a diamond appear bigger and more prominent by contrast.

Diamond shapes that may appear smaller

Diamond shapes with more depth like cushion or princess can appear smaller from the top, as a lot of the diamond’s weight hides in its depth, where you often can’t easily see it once set in jewelry.

How do you find the best shape for you? If you can, visit a store in person to try different sizes, cuts and shapes and see which feels most ‘you’ (or your partner). Or use AR (augmented reality) tools online to compare how different gemstones sit on a ring finger virtually.

How your partner’s lifestyle and style can influence carat choice

When buying a natural diamond engagement ring, it’s obviously important to consider your partner’s individual taste. Do they prefer to keep it low-key or are they more maximalist? Do they enjoy layering jewelry together, or do they stick to just a few key pieces? Noticing the kinds of accessories they usually gravitate toward can offer some helpful hints about their style.

And while we’re all for prioritizing beauty, ideally, you want to balance that with a bit of practicality. Does your partner have an active lifestyle? Do they work in healthcare or another job that involves physical tasks? Are they often outdoors or maybe super hands-on with kids or pets? All these factors play into what diamond size will be comfortable and easy to wear.

Is a higher carat diamond better?

Impressive, Hollywood-style rocks can turn heads, but remember size isn’t everything. If you’re budget conscious, you can still be savvy when it comes to diamond shopping.

As larger diamonds are increasingly rare1, a diamond’s price doesn’t simply increase with its weight in a linear fashion. Instead, prices climb exponentially once you pass certain weights. Doubling the size of your diamond typically costs up to three or four times more, rather than double2.

After a certain threshold, prices naturally jump – but you can use that to your advantage. For example, a 0.95-carat diamond often costs significantly less than a one-carat gem despite looking almost identical to the naked eye.

How cut affects how big a diamond appears

Of all the 4Cs of diamonds, it’s cut (not to be confused with shape) that has the biggest impact on how the gem interacts with light and how brilliant it ultimately looks. Most people don’t realize it can directly affect how big a diamond appears at first glance. A smaller, well-cut diamond can look brighter (and therefore larger) than a bigger, poorly cut one, which will appear dull by comparison.

Choosing a carat that feels right for the moment

When it comes to saying ‘yes’ to the ring, it’s about choosing something that doesn’t just weigh or look right but feels right. You might decide to go for a slightly smaller carat weight in favor of better quality or to make room for something more meaningful, like a custom setting or a personal engraving, perhaps? Or maybe you want to go bigger because it simply fits the moment? Why not!

Choosing the right engagement and wedding rings isn’t just about carat size, it’s about finding a design that feels personal, balanced, and true to your story.

At the end of the day, it’s about finding something meaningful and beautiful that helps tell your love story as a couple – and when you boil it down to that simple equation, finding the perfect diamond engagement ring shouldn’t be so complicated after all.

How to plan the perfect proposal https://adiamondisforever.com/commitments/how-to-plan-the-perfect-proposal/ Mon, 10 Nov 2025 12:11:10 +0000 https://adiamondisforever.com/?p=2412 Unforgettable proposal ideas and a step-by-step planning guide to help you pop the big question

The post How to plan the perfect proposal appeared first on A Diamond is Forever.

]]>
Every relationship is made up of a series of special moments or milestones. The first time you met and locked eyes with each other. The first dinner date when you realized things felt ‘serious’. Perhaps it was when you met each other’s families? Or the moment you told your partner you were in love with them. And right at the top of this list? For most couples, it’s the moment you realize that you want to spend ‘forever’ together. But once you’ve made that call, it’s often followed by the big question of how exactly the perfect proposal should pan out…

Reading this and want to propose? From choosing the perfect location to picking out that all-important ring, we’ll help you address everything you need to keep in mind while navigating the vast (and often overwhelming) world of proposal planning. But don’t forget, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to romantic proposals – ultimately, this is your choice and a way to reflect your own personal values and who you are as a couple.

Ready? Let’s get into it…

1. Understanding what a proposal means to your partner

The ‘perfect’ proposal isn’t necessarily recreating an iconic ‘on one knee’ moment, or one that ascribes to specific trends or movie scenes. It’s one that’s tailored to you both as a couple and helps express the kind of love that defines who you both are, together.

Keeping in mind what your partner values is a smart way to begin proposal planning. Try asking yourself whether they’re traditional or prefer surprises. Similarly, perhaps grand public gestures excite (or fluster) them. Pay close attention to the things they like and think about your shared memories. Try decoding clues from past conversations, social media saves and discussions with friends and family. Want to be doubly sure about what your partner may like? Now’s a good time to start slipping in subtle questions – you may discover unexpected inspiration…

2. Choosing the perfect ring

Figuring out how to choose the perfect natural diamond ring for your partner (diamond engagement rings are the most popular choice for a reason) is one of the most symbolically significant aspects of proposal planning.

Consider their personal style and how the ring would fit into their daily lives (and on their hand, too!). If you’re super confident about picking up a ring on your own, go for it. Though if your partner isn’t a big fan of surprises, you could make it a joint activity and go shopping together. Or you could have the ring designed after the proposal and propose with a temporary ring, just until then?

In terms of styles of natural diamond engagement rings, classics like solitaire (featuring a single central stone with no other diamonds or gemstones surrounding it) and halo (a central stone surrounded by a circle or halo of smaller diamonds) are timeless classics that never go out of style.

But if a bolder type of ring with customized details better mirrors the spirit of your relationship and story, go with that instead? Custom design elements boost the visual appeal of the diamond jewelry, while reflecting a shared history between you and your partner. And natural diamond engagement rings, as we know, are generally seen as a symbol of love – and a daily reminder of how rare and unwavering that sentiment really is.

3. Setting the vision for a proposal that feels right for you both

Drawing up a long list of elaborate romantic proposal ideas might not help you with proposal planning, but drawing inspiration from your shared memories will. Tailor the proposal to align with your partner’s personality. If they’re into big gestures, could you fly them out to where you vacationed together for the first time five years ago? If both of you prefer a pared-back, intimate setting instead, make it a romantic movie night, coupled with their favorite homecooked meal.

Think of how you want to remember the proposal. Heartfelt and poignant? Private and low-key? Bold with a touch of humor? Once you’ve figured that out, weave in details from your shared memories. An inside joke that still makes you laugh years later. A tiny ritual that’s sacred to the both of you. A detail from your first date that never fails to make you smile.

Remember, the proposal should be centered on just you and your partner. If you’re able to make sure the moment encapsulates that, you can’t go too far wrong.

4. Picking the right time and place to propose

The moment you ask your partner to marry you is going to be one that the two of you should cherish forever. So, picking the right location is key to proposal planning. Try basing your decision on sentimentality. Perhaps there’s a place that holds specifical significance. Do the two of you have a favorite local restaurant, or spot you first met? Or would you prefer to ask for their hand in marriage in that must-see city that’s been at the top of their travel wish list for years?

As you take stock of all the romantic ways to propose and try to decide on the right timing, factor in seasonality. Be it a beachside affair on a warm summer evening as the setting sun paints the skies orange, or a December day with Christmas right around the corner, seasonal specificities add an extra touch of atmospheric detail. So don’t forget to check weather forecasts (you don’t want your special day rained on!) as well as things like privacy (if it’s important) and accessibility, too.

5. Thoughtful details to elevate and create a truly unique proposal

How do you make a special day even more magical? By adding those thoughtful emotional touches, that’s how. Is there a beloved pet dog you’d like to involve in your proposal planning? Have them wear a little bowtie and join the two of you!

Try to get creative, where possible. If they’re a Wordle fiend or a Scrabble obsessive, try coming up with a fun word game that spells out the big question! Successfully planning a proposal while integrating thoughtful details of emotional gravity could even include family heirlooms. Perhaps a stunning solitaire ring that your grandfather proposed to your grandmother with? Or a song that means a huge amount to your partner. You could even write them a letter as part of your proposal, that they can hold onto as a memento.

6. Deciding who to involve

Figuring out who else should take part can be a tough call. If your partner values quiet intimacy over a celebration that includes more people than just the two of you, this step of proposal planning is pretty straightforward. But, if you and your partner belong to ‘the more the merrier’ tribe, having others join in can get a little more complicated.

Either way, try not to let the addition of others take the focus away from your special moment – or your partner’s joy at discovering what you’ve been planning. You could have your loved ones surprise your partner after they’ve said yes, for example, by throwing a post-proposal party with their help. They could set up decoy plans (so that the surprise element is stuck to) and you could even get them to discreetly help you in the proposal planning stage, like friends letting you peek at your partner’s mood boards or diary plans, for example.

7. How to put your love into words during the proposal

Worried about what you’ll actually say? Yes, planning how to ask someone to marry you can be a daunting task, but don’t worry – all those butterflies are perfectly normal. In fact, it’s an excellent idea to channel all that vulnerability into your words, if you can. Remember – all that really matters is that your words stay true and authentic to your relationship.

You could think of the early days for inspiration. Perhaps you were nervous on your first dates. In which case, try thinking of how quickly your partner started to feel like ‘home’. Think of how joyfully they celebrate your wins and how they stand by your side during those tougher times. Picture your shared future and how you plan on honoring and respecting them. Then, pen a few words down while still leaving room for spontaneity (remember: letting your emotions show is no bad thing).

8. Capturing the moment authentically

Another important part of proposal planning can be figuring out how to capture that special moment and preserve it forever. There’s no one right way to do it, if you choose to. You could hire a professional photographer who shoots the moment from a hidden spot, or you could even set up a discreet camera yourself, so the two of you can still enjoy privacy. Or if you want to go the extra mile and make sure the moment is given the VIP treatment, you could arrange for an elaborate post-proposal shoot.

But keep in mind that you don’t have to capture the proposal on camera if you and your partner prefer living in the moment, or feel camera-shy. The most romantic proposal ideas are the ones that feel honest and authentic, so when you’re choosing to document your special moment – or not, as the case may be – be sure to do it in a way that honors the two of you.

9. Celebrating and sharing your news

Congratulations! You’re now engaged. The final step of the proposal planning process? Sharing the good news with loved ones (arguably the best part). But before you make the announcement, take some time to really savor the moment privately, as a couple. These moments don’t come around very often, after all!

Video calls (where your partner can show off their beautiful new natural diamond engagement ring) are a fun idea, as are in-person announcements where you can really revel in your loved ones’ reactions. If you’re making the announcement on social media, be sure you’ve told your most important friends and family first, if you possibly can.

You’re likely feeling on cloud nine right now, so extending the joyful moment is always a great idea. How about a special dinner for two at your favorite restaurant? Perhaps you’ve had the foresight to plan a spa weekend for the both of you? You could even throw a big bash in the coming weeks for all your friends and family to celebrate with you in person, together.

Proposal planning can seem mighty intimidating at first, but it doesn’t have to be. Instead of aiming for perfection, focus on creating a special moment that captures your love for your partner and celebrates your story together so far. And while thoughtful planning is undoubtedly the best way to go, be sure to leave a little room for the unexpected, too – that’s often where the magic happens…

It’s official: Taylor Swift is in her Love Story era and this time, the fairy tale comes with a serious diamond.

On August 26, the singer and her football star fiancé, Travis Kelce, announced their engagement, instantly sending Swifties and, let’s face it, the rest of the internet into a frenzy.

Beyond the romance and the viral proposal photos (a pink and white flower arch in a secluded garden was the location for the big question), it’s Swift’s old mine-cut engagement ring (pictured below) that’s making headlines. With a sparkle so bold, it could literally make the whole place shimmer.”

What’s the design of Taylor Swift’s engagement ring?

Designed in collaboration with Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry, the engagement ring is nothing short of show-stopping. At its center sits an elongated old mine-cut diamond, bezel-set in glowing yellow gold and finished with delicate filigree (lace-like metalwork) along the band.

Estimated at a whopping 8-10 carats, the old mine-cut diamond has a warmth to its sparkle thanks to its yellow gold bezel setting, which secures and frames its antique proportions in a way that feels effortlessly modern.

What’s an old mine-cut diamond?

First popularized in the 18th century, old mine-cut diamonds (pictured below) are recognizable for their squarish silhouette, rounded corners, small table, lofty crown and 58 facets.

Hand-cut long before modern precision tools existed, the old mine cut was designed to give diamonds a soft brilliance in candlelight; evenings were when such glittering jewels were most often worn by the rich and powerful in the Georgian and Victorian era1.

Often hailed as the original cushion cut, its name is said to be a reference to the original diamond mines of Brazil and India. When diamond mining began increasing in Africa in the 1800s, eventually superseding those in Brazil and India, diamonds with an older style cut were called ‘old mine cut’. Over time, the term came to mean most diamonds cut in a square-like shape2.

This vintage style still has undeniable charm and romance, even nowadays, when round brilliant cuts are broadly the go-to for engagement rings and solitaires.

Defining new diamond trends

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement will already go down as one of the biggest pop culture moments of 2025, not least because swirling “are they/aren’t they” engagement rumors can finally be put to bed.

One thing that will live on beyond this year’s news headlines, however, is the ring. Guaranteed to spark a new trend in engagement rings and bridal jewelry, old mine-cut diamonds will no doubt become the must-have gem on your finger soon enough.

Whether it’s straight out of a rom-com, with fireworks, happy tears and a romantic soundtrack; in your living room over a delivery pizza; or with a flash mob in Grand Central Station (very bold move), proposing to your partner shows just how excited you are about spending the rest of your life with them.

But choosing a location to propose can be somewhat stressful. Do you go for a place that’s special to you, a low-key spot like your usual bench in the park, or do you add a splash of grandeur and opt for a historic site or a breathtaking spot in nature? You’ll also need to factor in time of day, weather conditions, and even opening times in some cases. Yes, it’s a lot to think about!

Every proposal is meaningful, so we’ve gathered the best locations in the world to help make yours truly legendary.

The Destination: Proposal Index

The Destination: Proposal Index is a ranked list of the 30 top places to propose in the US and elsewhere in the world. Forget hours of location scouting – this index is the ideal starting point for anyone looking for an exciting engagement location.

So how did we choose the top spots?

We selected 30 destinations (see our methodology below for the selection process), and then each one was rated on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being poor and 10 being best in class for 10 key metrics. We rated the destinations according to the following:

Accessibility

How easy is it to get to the destination by car or public transport, and is it accessible for individuals with mobility or other accessibility needs?

Cost of entry

What’s the admission price for the destination? One point was deducted if visiting the venue requires additional travel (e.g. private travel) or accommodation.

Instagram-ability

How popular is the location on Instagram, and how many times have people posted stories, reels or images of it?

Surprise factor

Based on Instagram and local news, how often are proposals reported at this location – would it be an obvious choice? We also considered how well a location allows you to keep your proposal plans a surprise. For example, popular tourist spots may rank higher than more secluded places, as it’s easier to create an excuse for visiting them.

Exclusivity

How many people visit the location each year? Higher footfall generally indicates greater popularity and public interest, meaning the location is less exclusive.

Cultural and spiritual impact

Does the location have historic, spiritual or cultural associations?

Amenities

How well-equipped is the venue or location in terms of facilities such as restrooms, seating, restaurants and cafés, and how accessible are these?

Safety

How much official information is available about the location’s safety? Factors include heights, surface and path maintenance, weather conditions, wildlife considerations and crime rates.

Weather stability

What’s the overall climate of the location, and how quickly can weather conditions change within a 24-hour period?

Noise level

How quiet or noisy is a location based on its proximity to urban areas, and natural or built features that affect sound? Visitor feedback on the overall noise experience was also considered.

Methodology

All destinations were selected based on TripAdvisor popularity, number of visitor reviews, related Instagram post frequency and/or features within travel or marriage proposal guides.

All rankings were made based on comparisons between these 30 destinations to showcase a variety of highly sought-after and memorable proposal spots.

Lower rankings do not mean that a particular venue is objectively ‘poor.’

Now about that engagement ring…

Proposal destination: tick. Next up, the engagement ring. And if there’s one tip we can give you on this topic, it’s that a natural diamond one is your best choice.

Natural diamond engagement rings are unrivalled in how they represent everlasting love, commitment and individuality. Formed over billions of years deep within the Earth, every natural diamond is completely unique, symbolizing the one-of-a-kind bond between two people.

And as the hardest naturally occurring substance on our planet, natural diamonds are also a fitting metaphor for a strong, enduring relationship. They’re tough, resilient, and made to last – just like true love, right?

Forget fussing over the flowers, cake and table plans – today’s brides and grooms are turning their attention towards wedding jewelry in a big way, with demand steadily growing each year1.

Some soon-to-be-newly-weds are looking for more than just sparkle on their big day (though admittedly, that’s welcomed!) and leaning towards groom and bridal jewelry that reflects what they value, who they are and the future they want to build together.

With natural diamonds having long symbolized love and strength, it figures that they should be top of the wish list for most couples preparing to get married. From engagement rings and wedding rings to eye-catching cufflinks, delicate bracelets and earrings that wow as you walk down the aisle, we explore why natural diamond wedding jewelry still reigns supreme…

A pair of diamond and gold cufflinks on a white shirt

Natural diamond jewelry is steeped in depth and meaning

Given the gravitas of the occasion (hello, one of the biggest days of your life!), we’d suggest giving some real thought to your groom and bridal jewelry. Choose pieces that tell a story, reflect your emotions or capture the spirit of your relationship, whatever your budget.

Formed billions of years ago, deep within the Earth’s mantle, and brought to the surface by some rather fierce but miraculous volcanic eruptions, natural diamonds not only brim with history and individuality but symbolize love, strength and hope, too.

Discovered in Ancient India (around 2500 BC), diamonds were first worn by emperors and royalty to signify wealth and power. Thanks to their dazzling, reflective crystal structure, they were seen as a symbol of divine light and were thought to hold mythical, protective powers2

It wasn’t until centuries later that the first-ever diamond engagement ring was given, however. It’s believed that Archduke Maximilian of Austria proposed to Mary of Burgundy in 1477 with a ring that featured flat diamonds arranged in the shape of an ‘M’3.

Diamonds have since become the go-to gemstone for engagement rings and wedding jewelry, helped by the iconic De Beers campaign ‘A Diamond is Forever’, which launched in 1947.

Legendary actress (and later Princess of Monaco) Grace Kelly’s Cartier engagement ring – a central emerald-cut diamond of 10.47 carats with a baguette-cut diamond on each side of it, given to her by Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956 – went on to inspire generations4. The ring wasn’t just glamorous; it was grounded in romance, grace (no pun intended!) and longevity – the same things people today want in their jewelry.

How do lab-grown diamonds compare to natural diamonds?

Laboratory-grown diamonds (also known as lab-grown diamonds, lab-created diamonds, synthetic diamonds and LGDs) have nearly identical chemical and visual properties as natural diamonds, however their origin is wildly different. LGDs are manufactured in laboratories and factories using industrial equipment and form in a matter of weeks.

And while they certainly have a place in today’s jewelry landscape, the way they’re created means they simply don’t carry the same heavy-hitting emotional, historical or geological legacy. There’s something immeasurably special about the gemstone on your engagement ring or wedding band having been entirely shaped by nature and acting as a powerful reminder of what commitment means.

Why wedding jewelry goes beyond just rings

When we think of bridal jewelry, rings – we’re talking engagement ring and wedding bands, as mentioned above – often take center stage. But that doesn’t have to be the case.

From twinkling diamond earrings that catch the light during your vows to a beautiful heirloom diamond necklace for that all-important first dance (just watch the disco lights add to its fire!), wedding pieces – standalone or part of a set – can be individual to every couple and every wedding.

For instance, a pair of delicate natural diamond studs or a chic, dainty tennis bracelet can add subtle sparkle to a minimalist bridal outfit.

And let’s not forget men’s wedding jewelry. The groom not keen on a diamond ring? Opt for natural diamond-accented cufflinks or a subtle pendant necklace, with a gemstone that stays close to the heart as a lasting symbol of love and connection. Thoughtful diamond wedding jewelry isn’t only a rite of passage reserved solely for brides.

And these types of pieces aren’t just accessories for a special day, they’ll become treasured jewels you’ll wear again on anniversaries and big life moments – or more often even, just because you want to feel that wedding magic all over again!

Bridal trends come and go but natural diamonds remain

Natural diamond wedding jewelry isn’t only for the proposal or the big day itself, it’s for your lifetime and many more beyond. As future heirlooms, these special pieces might one day be passed to children, godchildren or loved ones.

While bridal and wedding styles change each year, with some trends disappearing as quickly as they first came about, one thing’s for sure: natural diamonds aren’t going anywhere.

So, whether you’re dreaming of a delicate solitaire for your finger, a vintage gem on an opulent hair slide or a matching bridal jewelry set to dazzle in every photo, make it natural diamond. Naturally-formed and oh-so precious, these gems are the ultimate symbol of commitment, enduring love and meaning. Ready to find your forever piece?

Whether you’ve been dreaming of a white wedding since childhood or, quite frankly, see your big day simply as one huge party with your nearest and dearest, getting married is still one of life’s biggest events.

Over 2 million couples got married in the US in 20241, so we’re keen to know how much tradition still plays a part in the occasion, and whether attitudes towards jewelry, overall budget and even food have changed over the decades.

Natural diamond jewelry reigns supreme !

All weddings begin with a proposal, at the heart of which is usually an engagement ring. Choosing said ring shouldn’t be taken lightly and for those looking for tips on this topic, listen closely: an engagement ring should not only suit its receiver in terms of style, color and size, but represent commitment and ever-lasting love.

With that in mind, it’s not surprising that over half of couples in the US (55%) have natural diamonds featured in their wedding jewelry (which includes engagement rings and wedding bands), with an almost equal split across both genders.

While more than half of women have natural diamonds in their wedding jewelry (55%), more than half of men do (52%), too.

Created billions of years ago deep within the Earth, natural diamonds for centuries have symbolized enduring love and an unbreakable bond.

Inforgraphic - Which if any, precious gems featured in your wedding jewelry (including engagement and wedding rings) 55% said natural diamnds

While younger generations often like to shake things up and deviate from past traditions, plenty of Millennial  couples (48%) and Gen Z couples (38%) opted for natural diamonds, too. Yes, a natural diamond engagement ring or matching wedding day set is a classic choice but they’re still incredibly popular, likely because natural diamonds are truly timeless.

Other popular engagement and wedding gems among couples in the US include sapphire (15%), ruby (13%), emerald (13%) and opals (7%).

Round-cut is the shape that never goes out of style

When it comes to shape, round-cut (also known as round brilliant cut) gems come out on top overall, with one in four US couples having picked the circular cut for their wedding jewelry. The round cut was particularly popular with couples who’ve been married for a decade or more, with 35% of that demographic favoring the cut for their nuptial pieces.

The princess cut came in second with 22% of US couples choosing it, while emerald (11%); marquise, an elongated, oval-shaped (8%); and pear (6%) followed behind.

Infographic, What cut is in your engagment ring

Regarding geographic preference when it comes to gemstone cut, round came out on top in the Midwest, Northeast and West, while in the South round and princess were joint favorites.

Friends and family (and Pinterest!) are a big influence

Collating ideas and gathering tips for the big day is a fun and integral part of wedding planning. And in a world of social media, brimming with near endless style, decoration, venue and design tips, we were intrigued to know whether the source of inspiration had changed for couples over the years, from good old-fashioned print magazines to strictly online scrolling.

Interestingly, seeking ideas and advice from family and friends came out on top, with nearly half of US couples (40%), whether newlyweds or in longer term marriages, saying this was a key source of inspiration for their wedding.

Following that, couples said sources of inspiration included websites and blogs (27%), magazines (23%), Instagram (22%), Pinterest (22%), Facebook (21%) and TikTok (17%), while 13% of couples said that seeing photos and hearing details of celebrity weddings inspired their own choices.

We were shocked that this was a trend among Gen Z couples specifically, too. 41% said they preferred to get wedding inspiration from family and friends rather than from social media – only 33% of Gen Z couples in the US said they looked to Instagram and TikTok for wedding ideas, and Facebook even less (21%).

Less surprising was the trend among older, long-term couples of print magazines (28%) and books (9%) being more popular sources of inspiration compared to websites (only 16% said they referred to them), while social media isn’t even mentioned!

Inforgraphic - Where did you find inspiration when planning your wedding (including for attire and jewelry)? 40% of Gen-Z say friends and family

When it comes to gender splits, it seems that most men (47%) looked to family and friends for inspiration for their big day, which is significantly higher than women (34%). Women, it seems, love Pinterest, with just over a quarter of them (26%) using the visual platform as a place to seek out and create mood boards of wedding ideas, styles, tips and hacks. Pinterest doesn’t appear in the top inspiration sources for men.

Are vows still important? Yes, but with a personal touch…

From choosing the vows to picking a first dance song (and then booking some dance lessons, perhaps?!) all the way to remembering something old and something new before walking down the aisle, there are so many rituals and practices related to a wedding – and that’s just the traditional all-American wedding, for starters. So, how popular are they today?

Over half of US couples (56%) said that exchanging vows and/or rings was an important wedding tradition, with cutting the cake and the newlyweds’ first dance ranking just behind.

Among older, longer-married couples, 42% saw the bouquet toss as important, whereas only 35% of couples overall thought it was important, and 41% highly valued the “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” tradition, which was deemed a lot less important among younger generations. Only a quarter of Millennials and 16% of Gen Z couples placed any importance on the well-known rhyme on their wedding day.

When it comes to vows, personalized words are more popular among couples from younger generations: 45% of Gen Z and Millennial US couples had self-written vows instead of traditional vows on their big day.

Conversely, over half of US couples who’ve been married for 16 years or more (55%) said they had traditional vows, suggesting that older generations likely took a more conventional route.

“I sung a love song” and “[we had] both traditional and our own [vows]” were some of the comments surveyed couples said in relation to their vows.

When it comes to traditions that might be dying out, one in four US couples deemed the speeches as less important, while 17% said the lighting of the unity candle (when the couple light a large candle using two smaller candles to signify the merge of their lives into one).

One modern tradition that seems increasingly less popular is the ‘first look’, which is when the bride and groom meet privately ahead of the ceremony to see each other in their wedding outfits before anyone else. 18% of US couples said this was the least important wedding tradition.

Burgers and fries will (probably) be on the menu !

Food at a wedding is more than just a meal, it’s a way to show love and hospitality to your guests. It keeps the party energized, the conversation flowing and the dance floor full. A great menu gives everyone something to rave about long after the cake’s been cut, and let’s be honest, people are more likely to remember the food that your vows!

Keeping things patriotic, one in three couples in the US served North American food (we’re talking burgers, fries and mashed potatoes) at their wedding, while one in five served Italian. 14% of couples served Mexican cuisine.

Interestingly, almost a third of couples over the age of 55 reported not serving any food at their weddings.

Pink and blue color schemes are on the rise

While some couples might be happy to mix and match, a color scheme can be the secret ingredient that ties your whole wedding together. It can set the mood, whether you’re going for fairy-tale romance (think pale pinks and baby blues) or disco glam (hello, gold or silver sequins!) plus it helps your guests know what to wear and prevents any palette clashes come photo time.

Among couples in the US, 43% went with a classic white and/or ivory color scheme, while 22% chose blue, 16% pink and 14% lavender. Interestingly, almost a fifth of US couples (19%) dared to be bold and opted for a black color scheme, which shuns tradition but guarantees a super-chic wedding party, that’s for sure.

Less widely picked colors include navy (8%), peach (8%), blush (7%), orange (6%), mauve (5%) and rainbow (4%). 12% of couples in the US were clearly very relaxed and didn’t have a colour scheme at all!

Saving for the big day is taking longer

There’s no getting around it: weddings are expensive2, especially if you’re hoping to hire a venue, invite lots of guests, feed and water them, and then ensure a photographer is there to capture it all – and we’ve not even mentioned the luxury honeymoon yet…

With that and the cost of pretty much everything on the rise3, too, it’d be understandable if couples were starting to spend less on their wedding or at least look for alternative ways to fund it, like asking family members for help or taking out bank loans.

When we asked about saving for their wedding, on average it takes couples in the US one to two years to have enough money for their big day.

When broken down into generations, it took most Gen Z couples three to five years to save for their wedding, Millennial couples one to two years, and Gen X and Boomers less than a year to save for theirs.

For couples that received some financial towards their wedding, a whopping 68% were given money from parents. Contributions from other family members, friends and the bridal party or groomsmen also ranked, while 14% of couples said they used a credit card and 9% took out a bank loan.

The number one cost of a wedding actually arises well before the big day itself. Ranked as the biggest expense was rings, which includes engagement rings and wedding bands. As these are a life-long symbol of union and commitment (that last way beyond the last slice of wedding cake!), it’s no wonder that couples are keen to splash out on meaningful and often bespoke rings

The aforementioned honeymoon is next on the list, with couples happy to spend more on their first holiday as newlyweds than their wedding venue, catering and bridal attire. Other big wedding expenses continue to be photography and videography, flowers and entertainment.

Worry less about the guest list!

Weddings can be stressful because they come with sky-high expectations; everyone wants the “perfect” day, and in today’s social media age, there can be a lot of pressure to make everything picture-perfect, too. There are a million details to juggle, from seating charts and last-minute weather changes to family dynamics and budget sheets, so it’s no wonder that tension builds and things can feel overwhelming.

It’s months, sometimes years, of planning for an event that’s over in a day, which is a fact that some couples only realize in hindsight. Lots of couples often wish they had stressed less at the time and only have a clear perspective of what really mattered post-wedding.

When we asked couples in the US what things they wish they’d stressed less about when planning their wedding, 16% said family expectations, 14% said the weather, 14% said staying in budget and 13% said last-minute changes or surprises.

Also on the list of regretful stresses was the guest list, choosing wedding outfits, pleasing the in-laws and choosing the wedding venue.

Having spent the longest to save, 42% of Gen Z couples said they wished they’d worried less about budgets (both managing it and keeping within it), whereas one in five people-pleasing Millennial couples wished they’d worried less about family expectations or involvement.

At the other, very chilled end of the spectrum, a fifth of US couples said they didn’t stress or worry about their wedding at all. Lucky them!

The post Making it official? Why engagement rings with natural diamonds hit different appeared first on A Diamond is Forever.

Since the 15th century, an engagement ring – with a gleaming natural diamond as its centerpiece – has symbolized the eternal bond between a couple. And while marriage itself is one of the most important decisions you can make in life, choosing the ring with which to ask the big question really isn’t too far behind, right?

Yes, a stylish shape and Demi Moore’s 2025 Oscars dress-levels of sparkle are key criteria, but if you want an engagement ring to also reflect your emotion and commitment to your partner, a natural diamond is the only option. Here’s why…

What are natural diamonds?

Long before anyone learned how to cut and polish them to optimally reflect light, natural diamonds have been a symbol of everlasting love.

Formed by the combination of ferocious heat and intense pressure deep in the Earth’s mantle billions of years ago (most diamonds form between 140-300 kilometers below ground), a natural diamond connects us to the beginning of time.

Its story is one of incredible resilience, heroic even, having traveled to the Earth’s surface via a series of volcanic eruptions before finally being discovered by humankind. The shape, color and size of every natural diamond is a result of its individual journey.

Extreme temperature, pressure and explosive propulsion are factors that only the world’s toughest substance could survive, and thus natural diamonds are fitting symbols of enduring love, resilience and strength.

Natural diamonds are incredibly precious, as they’re a finite resource and can only be found in certain parts of the world. The biggest diamond mines are found in Botswana, Canada, Russia and South Africa.

All the sparkle, all the symbolism

Natural diamonds aren’t just admired for their beauty. If you were to ask the Ancient Greeks where diamonds originated from, they might have said such precious gems were the tears of the gods or splinters of falling stars. It’s thought they believed diamonds represented endurance and immortality, so much so that the Ancient Greek word for diamond, ‘adamas’, literally meant unbreakable1.

It’s said that the Romans thought diamonds carried the power of love and physical strength; legend has it that Cupid’s arrows were tipped with fragments of the gemstone2. In Ancient India, emperors believed diamonds to have great spiritual resonance, warding off evil and offering protection3

Today, many crystal healers see diamond as one of the most powerful gems on the planet. They believe it encourages spiritual awakening and creativity in a person and aids mental clarity. For some, diamond is thought of as the ‘great amplifier’, boosting the cosmic energy of all other crystals4.

Are lab-grown diamonds a total “no” then?

While both natural diamonds and laboratory-grown diamonds (also referred to as lab-grown diamonds, lab-created diamonds, LGDs and synthetic diamonds) have the same chemical and optical properties, they have very different origins

LGDs are made in a matter of days or weeks in energy-intensive factories or manufacturing plants. They’re man-made and mass-produced in batches, so they lack the rarity and unique characteristics of natural diamonds as well as their emotive and mythical quality.

Even as LGDs become more widely available, the allure of a natural diamond remains. Why? Because a natural diamond is so much more than its sparkle – it has a rich story that connects us to Earth and history.

Plus, given that most lab-grown diamonds occupy a narrow range of quality characteristics, the GIA has introduced a more streamlined assessment method for grading them. They will either be classified as ‘Standard’ or ‘Premium’ depending on their quality and craftsmanship, rather than graded based on the 4Cs of natural diamonds.

A diamond engagement ring isn’t just for the proposal. It’s a treasure to last a whole lifetime (and many lifetimes beyond) and should mirror the sentiment of enduring love and unbreakable commitment. Going natural is an absolute no-brainer!
